Colorado is known for its rugged terrain, stunning mountain peaks, endless hiking trails, and incredible natural areas, and during the colder months, it can be a beautiful winter wonderland. So before the snow fully melts and the temps warm up, catch the last bit of winter beauty at these seriously awesome destinations. Just remember to gear up and stay warm out there.
Conundrum Hot Springs
This one is a bit of a trek to get to, but 100-degree natural water springs sitting at 11,200 feet and a really cool campsite will meet you at the end of your excursion along the trail that parallels Conundrum Creek. Tucked between Castle Peak and Hillard Peak, this incredible destination is about 12 miles north and east of Crested Butte, Colorado. While others say it’s best to go during the summer, winter is best to avoid crowds and to truly take advantage of a warm soak after hiking through chilly weather.
While you’re there, you’ll have an up-close-and-personal experience packed with scenic views, frozen-over waterfalls, icy trees, snow patches, and steep avalanche chutes (travel with caution). From the hot springs, you’ll relax in the warm water while you take in views of the valley you just hiked through. This trek will require either cross-country gear or snowshoes. You will also need a permit to visit and or camp nearby.
Ashcroft Ghost Town
While you’re visiting the Conundrum Hot Springs area – or maybe you’re checking out Aspen –, be sure to swing by Ashcroft Ghost Town this winter. During the colder months, this deserted town offers a beautiful winter destination with way less visitors than you’d see during the warmer months. The snow-topped buildings, icy trees, and deserted area makes this ghost town that much spookier and intriguing this time of year.
Silverton, Colorado
Located in a remote part of the western San Juan Mountains (part of the Rocky Mountain Range), Silverton is a quaint, historic community surrounded by a stunning landscape. Staying in this little town places you right in the middle of 10+ mountain peaks, which brings you endless opportunities to snowshoe, cross-country ski, hike, and explore around.
Bear Creek National Recreation Trail
For experienced hikers looking for a thrilling winter adventure, the Bear Creek Trail (AKA Wasatch Trail) in Ouray, Colorado, is a must-see. While they say it’s best to visit from June to September, it’s also the busiest time of the year. So ditch the crowds and experience winter in an entirely new way. Long, narrow paths, plenty of switchbacks, and steep drop-offs make this the perfect trail for hiking aficionados who are up for a challenge.
