Unbelievable Hikes To Conquer in 2024

Unbelievable Hikes To Conquer in 2024

StorQuest brings adventures of a lifetime for the wanderlust ready to conquer heights, feel the rush of the wind, and soak in the beauty of diverse landscapes.

Kalalau Trail, Hawaii

Gear up and get ready for a moderate, though sometimes technical, hike through the beautiful Hawaiian Coast. You'll stop in your tracks for the stunning sea views of the coastline because you won't want to miss a step on this 11-mile hike linking Keʻe Beach and the Kalalau Valley on the north shore of Kauaʻi. The trail unveils breathtaking sea vistas, traversing towering cliffs adorned with lush tropical greenery. This 2-day adventure offers nonstop views of primeval valleys, cascading waterfalls, and secluded beaches along the Pacific.

Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Journey into Africa's highest peak through remote and stunning landscapes. Hiking distances ranging from 23 to 56 miles (5 to 9 days), are considered moderate to difficult, with altitude sickness causing some to turn back. You'll want an established guide with a good reputation who will also help you choose from the seven established routes on Kilimanjaro. Our top two favorite routes for intrepid adventure seekers are the 9-day Northern Circuit and the 8-day Lemosho route.

The Torres del Paine Circuit, Patagonia, Chile

The Torres del Paine Circuit is one of the most famous hiking routes in Patagonia, Chile. The shorter of the two routes is the "W" circuit, named for the shape it creates on a map. The W route offers breathtaking views, which is why it makes our list. The best part? You can hike the circuit without carrying food and gear between the refugios (campsites). The towers' base is the most famous attraction, requiring a demanding 13-mile hike through a lush green valley to an azure lake with three soaring granite towers in the background that give the national park its name.

Tips for Trekkers

  • Travel light: Every additional gram will burden your back and in some instances, the trails; if it's optional, consider leaving it behind.
  • Plan in advance: Numerous trekking routes require permits and advance bookings for lodges and campsites. For specific routes, it's often essential to make reservations months ahead.
  • Respect your feet: While boots provide more support, consider waterproof, lighter all-terrain shoes for long-distance hikes.
  • Protect your knees: Utilize trekking poles to manage challenging descents, a common feature—what goes up must come down— in almost every trek.
  • Ascend gradually: Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a serious risk, so ascend slowly and schedule rest days for acclimatization on any trek above 2,500m elevation.
  • Pay attention to the weather: Many trekking mishaps occur due to weather conditions, so check forecasts… and check again. If conditions appear unfavorable, find a safe spot to wait it out instead of pushing on over the next pass.
