With mountains, lakes, forests, trails, beaches, and pretty much everything else, Pennsylvania is the place to be for a great time outdoors when the weather is nice. Keep reading to see StorQuest’s top five list of destinations to check out this summer season in this beautiful eastern state.
1. Presque Isle State Park
This gorgeous state park on our top-five list seriously has it all: hiking, wildlife watching, hunting, picnicking, swimming, boating, surfing, fishing, and even cross-country skiing (but save this one for the wintertime). Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre area on a sandy southern peninsula right off Lake Erie. With stunning coastline views and countless recreational activities, it’s easy to spend days at a time here. And while this is a day-use only park with no campsite options, there are nearby accommodations if you do want to extend your stay a bit.
2. Skydive Pennsylvania
Looking to enjoy the summer in a more extreme-adventure kind of way? Try free-falling at speeds up to 120 miles per hour with the summer sun shining in the background and seriously insane views. For all you adrenaline seekers out there, you’ll definitely want to check out Skydive Pennsylvania, in Mercer, this season.
3. Beltzville State Park
Tucked into the southern foothills of the Poconos and right off Beltzville Lake, this beautiful state park offers almost everything that our aforementioned Presque Isle State Park does, but with added mountain biking opportunities! While you’re in the area, there’s the Pinchot State Forest and Hickory Run State Park, which are both must-see stops along the way, too.
4. Allegheny National Forest
With more than 500,000 acres of forest territory, there’s countless terrain to explore. Hiking is going to be one of the main activities here in the area, but at Allegheny National Forest, you can also do some OHV riding, paddleboarding, and camping. Be sure to plan your trip ahead of time by checking for upcoming weather conditions and getting a required day pass or overnight camping permit.
5. Cherry Springs State Park
Here’s another state park on our list, but this time, the highlight is their camping accommodations – specifically their after-dark star-gazing activities and camping out under the Milky Way. They are well-known for their overnight astronomy observation field and night sky public viewing area – it brings people here from all over the world. This park is so popular that their 2023 Galaxy Pass is already completely booked out for the year, so definitely plan in advance when you visit next year! Even though the 2023 Galaxy Pass is sold out, the night sky public viewing area and the Cherry Springs Rustic Campground are both still open to all visitors.
