Williston, North Dakota, is one of America's top towns for outdoor living. Located near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, there is plenty for water enthusiasts to explore. This one-time oil boomtown offers some of the best fishing and swimming holes in the area. Let’s dive into some of the most awesome water activities you can find in Williston!

Fishing

In Williston, you’ll find convenient access to many popular fishing spots – all within a quick drive of town. With excellent access to Lake Sakakawea and surrounding fish waters, it’s easy to grab your rod and head out to fish after a long day at work. Fish the Missouri River, Yellowstone River, and Lake Sakakawea for walleye, northern pike, perch, trout, or bass. In May, the prehistoric paddlefish come to the Missouri and Yellowstone Confluence each year to spawn.

With more shoreline than California, nearby Lake Sakakawea should be a top summer destination for anyone in the area. If you’re willing to travel a bit, you will not be let down by the numerous beaches and plenty of water activity opportunities available at this North Dakota water playground.

And let’s not forget the Missouri River. There are many spots with swimming access as well as other water sports. A bucket-list stop in North Dakota, this beautiful river is one to be enjoyed by all.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Canoeing and kayaking top the list for any Williston water explorer. Paddlers love Yellowstone River, Missouri River, and nearby Lake Sakakawea. If you want to venture out a bit, take a trip out to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Not extreme enough for you? Grab your wakeboard and boat and head for the marina at Lewis and Clark State Park. Trenton Lake Recreation area is a quick 15-mile trip from Williston, and is another great spot for boating and water sports.
