Walk the Waterfront
Flowing from the Potomac Highlands into the Chesapeake Bay, the Potomac River is one of the longest rivers along the East Coast. Head out to the western shore in Virginia for Arlington’s renowned waterfront views. While you’re there, make the trip to Theodore Roosevelt Island. Located in the river near the Key Bridge, this 88.5-acre island and national memorial offers lots of awesome trails through wooded areas and swampy marshland.

Washington & Old Dominion Trail
This 45-mile paved, shaded trail delivers great running, cycling, and skating, and horse riders should definitely check out the adjacent 32-mile gravel horse trail. Take in the gorgeous views of gentle streams as you make your way through the center of urban activity into the Virginia countryside. Bring the pup and tackle it together!

Donaldson Run Trail and White Trail
This short 2-mile loop offers a great option for a quick exercise. While it can be a little challenging to make out the trail when it’s covered by leaves or snow, it’s well worth the struggle. Just think of it as part of the adventure! Take the dog with you and explore the small watering holes, gorgeous rocks, and stream crossings.

Potomac Heritage–C&O Canal Loop
This 8-mile trail loops along the Potomac River, providing some of the most picturesque views in the city. While the trail is a little overgrown in spots, the hike is worth the effort for the scenic waterfall alone. The path can get pretty slippery and rocky, so come prepared with footwear that gets great traction, and follow the blue paint to stay on the route.
