Rock Climbing 101: Here's How To Get Started

Are you new to rock climbing? Start your journey by joining a vibrant community of climbers passionate about conquering vertical challenges.

Bouldering Gear

Every adventure starts with having the right gear. For the budget-minded beginner, outdoor bouldering requires a relatively simple setup: Shoes, a crash pad ( to lessen the impact of a bouldering fall), chalk and chalk bag, and a brush. Most beginners' footwork is such that your first pair of shoes will last only a short time, so there's no point spending big bucks on them.

Pro Tip: Fit your shoes to be snug but not painful.

Rock Climbing Gear

Rock climbing gear is a more significant investment, and you'll want to get the best gear out of your budget as possible. Here are the basics: Climbing rope, belay device, climbing harness, helmet, carabiners, climbing pack, harness, and rock climbing shoes. Mountain climbing rope costs over $100 for a 50m (164') length. Climbing and bouldering shoes range in price between $50 and $200. You get the idea. However, areas to save are buying used climbing shoes and clothes.

Pro Tip: when you start in a climbing gym or outdoors with a climbing guide, most of the climbing equipment will be provided for you.

Learn the Ropes

In a nutshell, the climbing community is pretty awesome and you’ll find lots of support along the way. Most climbers start out bouldering, which doesn't require ropes or harnesses, and routes are close to the ground. Get involved with a climbing gym where you'll find instructors and, equally important, meet other enthusiastic climbers. Climbing gyms offer bouldering and rope climbing classes and are a great option to amp up your climbing skills and build strength and confidence.

Pro Tip: Look for second-hand home training equipment like tension hangboards, kettle boards, and grip strengtheners online.

Climbing Pack Essentials

You'll never forget the exhilaration of your first outdoor climb!  Along your journey to vertical heights, you'll learn from guides and fellow climbers. Weather and other regional differences will dictate what you bring in your pack, but the essential gear is always the same. Always pack your climbing essentials, a first aid kit, food, water, and protective clothing. Make sure you're prepared because emergencies can happen anywhere at any time.

Pro Tip: Ropes should always be stored in a dry, cool environment, whether on the trails and mountains or off-season.
