Nevada Bucket List Spots to Check Out When the Weather Cools Down

|

Winter is finally coming after a solid year of adventures. One state a lot of people tend to overlook for winter adventures is Nevada, which is home to plenty of awesome winter camping, hiking, snowboarding and skiing, and also boasts some great spots for chilling in natural hot springs. Here are some of the best Nevada destinations during winter.

Snowboarding and Skiing

Winter is the time to carve up some powder, and Nevada has several epic ski resorts in Tahoe and around the rest of the state. Some good spots for hitting the mountain are:

  • Heavenly Ski Resort
  • Mount Rose
  • Lee Canyon
  • Ruby Mountain Heli Skiing

Heavenly sprawls 4800 acres of intermediate to advanced terrain, Lee Canyon sets you up just outside Las Vegas for an added vacation dimension, and Ruby Mountain Heli Skiing is your prime opportunity to chopper up with a certified pilot to snowy peaks, hop out, and blaze your own trail in 200,000 acres of terrain.

Hiking in Nevada during the winter offers a lot of gorgeous snowy peaks and picturesque landscapes. Some notable winter Nevada trails include:

  • Coconino National Forest
  • Genoa Trail System Near Lake Tahoe
  • Mount Charleston, Clark County
  • Mary Jane Falls in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area
  • Stateline Fire Lookout, Tahoe National Forest
  • Hunter Creek Trail Outside Reno
  • Cathedral Rock Outside Las Vegas
  • Ice Box Canyon Outside Las Vegas

Hunter Creek Trail, Mary Jane Falls, Ice Box Canyon, and Cathedral Rock give you the added reward of seeing frozen waterfalls on your hike, while Ice Box also has a lot of icy scrambling for an added challenge. The Genoa Trail System is 16 miles long and located outside a quaint town that will give that extra winter wonderland vibe.

Camping

From the Aztec sandstone and tan limestone at Valley of Fire to the snow canvasing canyons of eroded rock structures at Cathedral Gorge State Park, Nevada camping sites offer rugged beauty along with a myriad of opportunities to hike.

  • Valley of Fire
  • Cathedral Gorge State Park
  • Lower Lehman Creek Campground in Great Basin National Park
  • Echo Canyon State Park in Pioche, Nevada
  • Spring Valley State Park in Pioche, Nevada
  • Mountain Shadows RV Park in Wells, Nevada

A lot of these can drop below zero, but Cathedral Gorge State Park offers water, electric hookups, and restrooms, while Duck Creek, Mountain Shadows, and Echo Canyon State Park are perfect for RVing. For awesome hiking options to connect with the wilderness, Spring Valley gives you numerous trails, and the Great Basin National Park closes its two main roads to cars, letting snowshoers hike and enjoy the winter serenity from the Lower Lehman Creek Campground.

Kick Back at the Hot Springs

The Gold Strike Hot Springs are at the end of a hike with rock scrambling, so the trip up to them is also another opportunity for epic adventure.
