We're excited to partner with Miami Waterkeeper as we strive for a more sustainable future for Miami and its underwater and natural treasures.
Preserve Florida's Coral Reefs And More
Miami Waterkeeper protects South Florida’s waterways by advocating for resilient solutions that are grounded in nature, rooted in science, and driven by community. The organization works diligently to preserve and restore South Florida's marine habitats, including coral reefs, mangroves, wetlands and seagrass beds. These ecosystems are connected in meaningful ways, affecting both marine life and humans. For example, mangrove forests in Florida cover approximately 469,000 acres and serve multiple purposes such as contributing to nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, sediment retention, and provide essential habitats for marine life. Extreme heat continues to threaten Miami's coral reefs, which are important to the local community and the state's economy. Miami Waterkeeper collaborates with partners and the community to implement conservation projects and advocate for the protection of sensitive coastal ecosystems.
1000 Eyes On The Water
As one of the leading environmental advocates in Florida, Miami Waterkeeper's pioneering program, 1,000 Eyes on the Water, educates people on how to report pollution. This program offers virtual training in Spanish and English, teaching participants how to properly identify and report different types of debris and contamination that cause harm to the state's waterways. By participating in the program, volunteers become part of the solution and can feel good about doing their part to help keep Miami's waterways clean and healthy.
Empower And Educate Local Communities
Besides 1,000 Eyes on the Water, Miami Waterkeeper raises awareness about water issues and empowers individuals to take action with more signature programs, including Junior Ambassadors, which trains the next generation of environmental leaders, Youth Environmental Action Days (YEA Days) and Floating Classrooms that educate youth in environmental science through hands-on experiences, and a Water Quality Monitoring program that analyzes ocean waters for fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) weekly. The nonprofit also takes a deep dive into researching the economic values of coastlines, waterways, and wetlands as well. For example, the ecosystems of Biscayne Bay, coastal wetlands, seagrass meadows, and mangroves represent significant contributions to Florida's clean water economy.
