How to Pack Up & Travel Abroad this Summer

|

As you prepare for an adventure abroad, there are many things you must do before you head out on the trip of a lifetime. Luckily, StorQuest has created a simple list of essentials you must complete before hopping on the plane.

Decide on a Destination and Start Studying

Doing some research on the destination you are planning to visit this summer is the best way to be prepared. No matter how prepared you are, there are going to be things along the way that might surprise you. It’s fun learning about other cultures, so make sure you plan accordingly if a country is more conservative or traditional than you’re used to.  And always memorize a few basic phrases in the language of your destination country so you can communicate well enough to get by.

Don’t Forget Travel Documents and Banking

Most countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months after your return date. In order to avoid being turned away or delayed at customs, double check your passport to ensure you are good to go. Because you will be traveling everywhere with your passport, it is a good idea to get a passport holder to keep it safe. Keep digital copies on your phone and print a couple extra in case you do misplace it. It’s crucial to notify your bank of any international travel so your purchases are not declined. With most large national banks, this is something you can do online or in the app.

Get Vaccinated

International travel can be a perfect opportunity to create memories you will never forget while exploring the world. However, traveling to a foreign country can also pose health risks from environments you aren’t used to. Vaccination is the first step to remaining healthy on your journey. Speak with your healthcare professional in advance to see if there are any recommended vaccines to lower your chances of catching something while abroad.

Maximize Suitcase Space

Whether you are planning on exploring the world for three weeks or three months, maximizing your suitcase is a crucial part to beginning your next adventure. Begin by rolling up your clothes, such as T-shirts, sweats, jeans, and jackets. This will optimize room in your bag as well as prevent wrinkles. Put personal items in plastic bags or a toiletry kit and throw them in a backpack to create more room for clothes in your suitcase. If you want to take your organization to the next level, use packing cubes to separate your different clothing. And remember, always leave extra room for souvenirs.

Stay Connected

In order to stay connected with friends and family during your travels, there are a few options you can choose from. You can buy an international phone plan ahead of time, unlock your phone and make calls through a foreign carrier, or simply buy an international prepaid SIM card. Apps such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp also allow international calling and texting through a WiFi connection.
