Stewart Island, New Zealand
At the end of the world, south of New Zealand’s South Island, you’ll find an awesomely remote trek through rich forests, unperturbed coastlines, and authentic nature. The uniquely indigenous kiwi bird resides in abundance on this island, making it pretty much the only place to find them in the wild. Early Māori history and sawmilling relics add to the adventure on the 36-kilometer Rakiura Track.
But be ready. Stewart Island has unpredictable weather, strong winds, deep mud, and plenty of danger to bring the exhilaration back into trekking – even for the most experienced. It’s highly recommended to book 12 months in advance.
