Budget Friendly Guide For Exploring Mississippi

|

Adventuring on a budget this season? StorQuest has your back. Here are a few fun things to do in Mississippi that won't hurt your wallet.

Historic Monuments

Mississippi is a state that holds a lot of history, dotted with unique monuments that are often free to visit. One such destination is the Windsor Ruins in Claiborne County. The ruins are the surviving remains of an old colonial-style mansion lost to a fire. It has been featured in Mark Twain's literature and has made several appearances in films.

Another iconic monument in Mississippi is the turning angel statue at Natchez City Cemetery. The statue was dedicated to honor the lives of the people who passed in a tragic explosion. It's also been known to look up at cars passing by. Locals suggest driving by at night to see it for yourself.

Nostalgic Sites

Whether you're a southern rock fan or a media guru, you'll find nostalgic experiences in Mississippi. Start at the Birthplace of Kermit the Frog in Leland, where Jim Henson was said to have grown up. The town has a small museum full of Muppets and memorabilia honoring the green legacy. Admission is by donation, so you can enjoy a quick tour without breaking the bank.

Kermit was not the only famous person born in Mississippi. Tupelo is the home to the king, Elvis Presley. You can do a full tour of the town full of attractions and sites that detail the early life of Elvis, including the shotgun shack. The shack was the birthplace of Elvis and has since been restored to its original state. The house tour costs eight bucks to walk through, which isn't too shabby of a price to peek into the past.

Outdoor Spots

If you're looking for free fun around Mississippi, check out the great outdoors. You don't need anything more than your shoebaru's and chevrolegs to embark on an awesome trek.

Check out De Soto National Park -- in particular, Tuxachanie Trail. The 12 mile hike features historical signs that teach you about the area while you go. You'll have a great view and pick up some interesting facts on your journey. The park has free fee days so you can explore the trails on your schedule and on your budget.

Another epic outdoor spot in the state is Red Bluffs in Foxworth. It's a short hike less than a mile long that winds through an eroded canyon. The elevation change makes the trail a little more challenging to traverse, but the scenery is worth the work.
