Best Ski Resorts Across the U.S.

Winter is here and it’s time to hit the slopes, but with so many options across the U.S., it can be hard to know where to start. Here is our list for the most epic ski resorts in the United States.

Colorado Ski Resorts

It’s no secret that Colorado resorts are brag-worthy. You’ll get some awesome powder, a wide range of terrain, and plenty of after-slope fun. Aspen has four resorts and Vail has great corduroy and verticals. The most notable resorts for those seeking intermediate to advanced thrills are:

  • Winter Park
  • Aspen’s Highlands
  • Breckenridge
  • Vail

Winter Park is the longest running resort in the Rocky Mountain State and offers excellent advanced terrain, including its tree skiing on Eagle Wind, steep runs on Cirque, and renowned bumps on Mary Jane. Intense, eye-watering verticals are found at Highlands in Aspen, and for the boarders out there, both Vail’s Golden Peak jumps and Breckenridge’s Freeway half pipe are some top choices.

Vermont Resorts

Vermont is full of advanced ski terrain and generous snowfalls. You can hit these remarkable resorts to get the adrenaline going:

  • Mad River Glen
  • Jay Peak Resort
  • Killington Mountain Resort

Mad River Glen boasts high-level runs that are considered some of the most difficult, while the easy runs are intermediate. Jay Peak gets an unbelievable amount of snow on some wicked tree-lines and turns. Lastly, despite its lethal name, Killington Mountain is mostly good for the après and the expansive resort.

Lake Tahoe Resorts

Tahoe has a lot to offer, across the whole gamut of skill, but here are some resorts to check out to test your mettle on some black and double-black diamonds.

  • Kirkwood
  • Mount Rose
  • Palisades
  • Mammoth

While all of these are best for awesome adventure, the Palisades has more diversity in ability level while offering some alluring nightlife and social atmosphere.

East Coast

Outside of Vermont, you’ll find even more resorts that can take your breath away.

  • Sugarloaf Resort, Maine
  • Cannon Mountain, New Hampshire
  • Whiteface Mountain, New York

Sugarloaf is a remote ski wonderland. The trip is worth it not necessarily for the advanced terrain, but for the wild weather conditions that make you feel at odds with Mother Nature and its expansive choices for slopes. Cannon Mountain boasts stunning vistas and a stellar variety of terrain, while Whiteface Mountain in New York stands to challenge the most avid sportsmen.

And Still More!

Across the whole nation, you’ll keep finding incredible opportunities to carve, trailblaze, and jet down faces. Here are some more of our favorite ski resorts:

  • Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wyoming
  • Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico
  • Park City, Utah
  • The Canyons, Utah
  • Big Sky Resort, Montana

The formidable inclines at Taos are not for the faint of heart, and should be on the bucket list. Park City is in an awesome converted mining town and is the largest ski resort in the U.S., while Big Sky is the second largest. The former, Park City, and The Canyons are two more exciting opportunities for those who like to snowboard, serving up a slew of jumps and jibs.
