Whether you’re looking for a last-minute campsite to check out in the next few summer months or just wanting to start planning for next year, here are a few of our favorite campgrounds across the state of Utah.
The Fruita Campground – Torrey, Utah
Capitol Reef National Park hides an under-the-radar campsite perfect for your next summer adventure. The Fruita Campground charges a $25 nightly fee that includes picnic table use, fire rings, restrooms, and a water and dump station. This area rarely books out during the summer, which is a big plus if you’re planning an impromptu trip.
This quaint spot tucked into the canyon provides a less-crowded campground to rest at between your summer activities, while offering nearby (walkable) access to the Goosenecks Trail and the Capitol Gorge Trail. During your stay here, you’ll be situated between beautiful canyon walls and dense forested wilderness. Plus, you’ll have semi-shaded, grassy areas all around to take a break and cool off during the warmer parts of the day.
Sand Island Campground – Bluff, Utah
Situated on BLM territory in the southeastern corner of the state, the Sand Island Campground is quite the hidden gem. Often less visited and less crowded during the warmer months, this FCFS, $15-per-night campsite offers an awesome place to visit in the summer months. And while it is absolutely HOT here during that time of year, we recommend this 27-site campground for those who have a rig outfitted with AC to keep your stay a much more pleasant one.
Campground facilities include drinking water, picnic areas, vault toilets, fire rings, and even a boat launch for the San Juan River, which is mere steps from the campsite, but you’ll need a permit for any boating activities. Another super-cool highlight at this destination, aside from the stunning views and peaceful desert surroundings, is the 100-yard wall of ancient petroglyphs, thought to be carved anywhere from 300 to 3,000 years ago.
Goblin Valley Campground – Green River, Utah
As a runner up to the Arches National Park near Moab, the Goblin Valley State Park is a must-see, must-visit destination in the summer season. Sitting smack-dab in the middle of the Utah desert, it gets extremely hot here during the warmer months, but camping in your air-conditioned rig makes for one pretty awesome stay at just around $45 per night.
Bright pink and purple sunsets, multi-colored sediment layer walls, quirky-looking rock formations, out-and-back hiking trails, overlook viewing points, bright-blue skies, and open desert for days – this is an epic adventure for the camping aficionado.
