Beat the Summer Heat With These Beautiful Outdoor Destinations

|

Searching for ways to beat the summer heat? Explore these cool outdoor destinations that offer the perfect escape from sweltering temperatures.

Austin, Texas

Barton Springs Pool is a verdant oasis in the middle of Austin where locals go to cool off when temperatures are on the rise. This spring-fed urban swimming hole is built into Barton Creek and more is like swimming in a lake or lazy river. The water averages a refreshing 68 to 71 degrees making it one of the best places to beat the summer heat and humidity in Texas.

Del Norte, Colorado

Known as "the gateway to the San Juan Mountains," Del Norte is where you’ll find fewer crowds, endless trail systems, and places to climb, fish, and camp. Daytime adventures include hiking on trails with breathtaking views and mountain biking on singletracks winding between towering boulders and rock canyons. Penitente Canyon, an internationally-renowned area for rock climbing, stays cool in the warmer months. Nighttime temps can get chilly, low to mid-50s, so bring a light jacket along with plenty of sunscreen.

San Diego, California

You might not believe it, but San Diego's coast is the ultimate escape from summer's scorching heat. This iconic beach and surf town stays surprisingly cool compared to Los Angeles. The coastline stretches for 70 miles with no shortage of beaches ideal for a day trip or weekend getaway. With temperatures in the high 70s in July and August, it's the perfect place to chill out, surf, and play frisbee on the sandy shores with sea breezes to keep you cool.

Bend, Oregon

Escape Portland's urban heat island for one of the west coast's favorite getaway destinations. Tucked between snow-covered peaks and the Deschutes River, Bend is an outdoor mecca for mountain biking, hiking, and camping. When it's time to cool off, you can surf at the water park or kayak, float, and SUP on the mild currents of the Deschutes. Even when summer daytime highs reach the mid-90s, the evenings regularly cool to the mid-50s. On your way, stop off at Storquest RV & Boat Storage in Wilsonville, just off the I-5, to pick up your outdoor toys.

Denali National Park, Alaska

If you're looking for a chill summer, head north to the breathtaking Denali National Park, where daytime temperatures average around 66 degrees. You can find solitude and closeness with nature while glimpsing Denali's snow-covered peaks. Hop on a bus and let someone else drive so you can watch for wildlife like moose, caribou, wild sheep, wolves, and grizzly bears.

Seattle, Washington

Known for rain, more rain, and gloomy overcast days, Seattle is just right in the summertime. With an average of only 11 rainy days, summer is the ideal time to take advantage of Seattle's rare but glorious sunshine without wilting in the heat. Stop off at Seattle's waterfront, where urban charm meets natural beauty at the Iconic Pike Place Market, and watch ferries gliding across Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountains in the background.
