5 Tips for Traveling Abroad This Summer

Whether you're jetting off to Europe or Southeast Asia, no matter your destination, a little preparation goes a long way. If you have not been abroad or usually check a suitcase when traveling, packing is the key to a stress-free trip. Moreover, it’s much easier to travel with lighter weight bags than a heavy piece of luggage you checked-in at the beginning of the trip.

Experienced travelers spend a lot of time researching, experimenting, and figuring out packing hacks to save a little space. They also know they only have two hands when negotiating luggage through small towns, big cities, and sometimes dirt roads. So, before you board the plane, check out these five smart tips to make your summer travel adventures smoother, easier, and more fun.

Tip One: Learn How To Travel With A Carry-On And Backpack

Traveling without checked luggage is a game changer for so many reasons. First, lugging around a heavy suitcase is not fun—and let's admit, it's easy to pack right up to the weight limit for check-in luggage. Traveling abroad with a carry-on may require some new packing strategies, however. For example, instead of sweatshirts that take up a lot of space, bring a couple of cashmere blend sweaters for layering. Also, be sure to wear your bulkiest clothes and shoes on the plane. While there is some debate on packing by rolling clothes or using compression packing cubes, we've found that using a combination of the two ensures the best use of space.

While airlines have strict rules around the sizes of carry-ons they will accept (each airline has different specifications), you want to also carry a large backpack to stow under the seat. Look for a 35L to 45L pack with a clamshell opening. It will be like having a separate mini suitcase! Remember to pack liquids only in your toiletries bag or a clear quart-size bag. Try to sub out as much liquid as possible for solid options. Shampoo and cream rinse bars, stick foundation, and powdered toothpaste are a few examples.

Tip Two: Travel With More Than One Credit Card

Whether you are traveling alone, with a friend, or in a group, it’s advisable to bring more than one credit card on your trip abroad. Bring one main credit card that you use for everything to make it easier to keep track of your spending. The backup card (ideally from a different bank) will be for use in case the first card gets lost or compromised.

Keep the credit cards separate. For example, carry one in your wallet and stash the other in a hidden spot in your luggage or with your passport. Don't forget to notify your bank of your travel plans. If you don't know how to do this in your financial institution's app, call their toll-free number to let them know you're traveling so they don't flag foreign transactions as fraud. Also, be sure to pack your ATM card. In countries like Mexico, this is often the easiest way to get local currency when traveling to remote towns that do not have banks.

Lastly, pick up some local currency at your hometown bank for arrival (transport, tips) and put your cards and money in a neck or RFID-blocking wallets.

Tip 3: International Travel ID & Documents

Before traveling, be sure your passport will be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Make paper copies to take with you and store one copy in your carry-on luggage, one copy in your backpack, and leave the other copy with someone at home. Also, save digital copies of your passport, driver's license, and other backup forms of ID. Especially if you plan to rent a car. Do the same with travel insurance, your itinerary, and emergency contacts.

Will you need an International Driving Permit (IDP)? If you plan to rent or drive abroad, some countries, like Croatia, require you to carry an International Driver's License. These are easier to get than you might think at your local AAA office. For a hassle-free security line experience, consider getting TSA PreCheck for U.S. departures. You won’t have to remove shoes, your laptop, your lightweight jacket or toiletries bag.

And if you’re subletting your abode, stash the stuff you don't need right now—clothes, ski gear, adventure gear, and other valuables in a StorQuest storage unit. With 24/7 access and digital gate codes, your gear is safe and ready when you are.

Tip Four:  How To Pack All The Toiletries For International Travel

From bug repellent and sunscreen to facial serums and shaving cream, there is a seemingly endless list of items that take up valuable real estate in your toiletry bag. Save that valuable space for true liquids like contact solution or serum by swapping them out for solids or powders. For example, you can find shampoos and conditioner bars, which last longer and are eco-friendly. Other examples include face wipes, lotion bars, tooth powders and deodorant bars. If you plan to stay at upper-end hotels, use their hair products, soaps, and lotions.

Tip Five: What Not To Bring On Your Trip Abroad

A ccommon mistake is to overpack items you think you'll need but, in reality, can do just fine without. For example, don’t give up space for multiple pairs of shoes. Choose a pair of shoes that can be dressy or casual but, most importantly, comfortable. Of course, bring or wear your tennis shoes on the plane and bring lightweight sandals. Don't pack for "what if" scenarios, like fancy dinners or beach days, unless you're going to a tropical island or a wedding. Be mindful of your tech gear, too. Bring duplicates of items you cannot replace in the event you leave something important, like your phone charger, at the last place you stayed. The key to minimalist travel is focusing on versatility and practicality of everything you pack. Choose two to three color themes you can mix and match throughout the trip and as many quick dry garments as possible. If you're committed to becoming a minimalist traveler—skipping the checked luggage and baggage claim lines—the challenge isn't packing light—it's packing smart.
