5 Rad Road Trip Ideas From Williston

|

Although North Dakota’s awesomeness isn’t always recognized, this Great Plains state is packed with amazing destinations – everything from arts and culture hot spots to adventure-filled outdoorsy destinations. Here are five rad road trip ideas from Williston.

Enchanted Highway

For an enchantingly immersive art experience, take a trip along North Dakota’s Enchanted Highway. This stretch of I-94 between Gladstone and Regent showcases a series of larger-than-life metal sculptures portraying everything from pheasants and geese to Teddy Roosevelt. Be sure to visit the Enchanted Castle in Regent for the full experience.

Maah Daah Hey Trail

Looking for the mountain biking trip of a lifetime? The 144-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail is off-the-charts awesome, featuring some gnarly but epically spectacular singletrack through the Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. You’ll be treated to some unreal views of North Dakota’s stunning buttes and grasslands as you twist and turn your way through the trail. Whether you tackle this EPIC trail – it’s been officially designated one by the International Mountain Biking Association – in chunks or all at once, it belongs high on your bucket list.

Devils Lake

For an unforgettable fishing trip, hit the road for Devils Lake, the largest natural body of water in North Dakota. The “Perch Capital of the World” offers some of the best fishing in the U.S. Alongside all those perch are plenty of walleye, northern pike, and white bass. For a truly epic fishing experience, make this a winter road trip and try your hand at ice fishing. No worries if you’re a newbie. There are plenty of guides in the area who will show you the ropes. If you’re looking for a little more fast-paced adventure while you’re in the area, check out Grahams Island State Park and White Horse Hill National Game Preserve for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or fat biking fun.

Bismarck

Boasting a wide variety of art galleries, museums, and attractions, North Dakota’s capital city abounds in culture and history. Make sure your Bismarck itinerary includes a stop at the State Capitol, which towers above the city skyline and is affectionately dubbed the “Skyscraper on the Prairie” at 19 stories high and 242 feet tall. Other can’t-miss spots include the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, a stunning modern structure that features artifacts of all kinds – from a life-size T. rex skeleton cast to the world’s largest giant squid fossil. There’s a fair share of outdoor fun to be had in Bismarck and the surrounding area as well, with must-visit destinations like Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park nearby and plenty of places to bike and play along the Missouri River.

Fargo

Known mostly for the cult classic film that shares its name, Fargo has a lot more to offer than just that. The largest city in North Dakota features a surprisingly awesome arts scene, some solid museums, fantastic restaurants, and a vibrant downtown district. There’s also plenty of outdoor adventure to be had. Hiking at Buffalo River State Park. Cross-country skiing at any of Fargo’s 10 parks with groomed trails. Canoeing or kayaking the Red River. Golfing at any of the area’s world-class courses. Fargo has it all. Oh, and don’t pass up on your chance to snap a photo with the infamous wood chipper from the film Fargo while you’re there. Fargo’s a bit of a haul from Williston – more than seven hours – but it’s totally worth the trip.
