From the bay to the sound and all the rivers, lakes, preserves, and parks in between, there’s plenty to see and do in and around Ronkonkoma – this is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise.
Bike the Glacier Ridge Trail
Gear up, get on two wheels, and ride this 13-mile dirt trail when you’re ready for some adrenaline. Glacier Ridge drains fairly quickly after rain rolls through, and most of the ride is not too difficult – just stay on the marked blue trail for a less advanced route or hit the black diamonds if you want to ramp things up. This is a high-traffic trail with a few steep twists and turns, so be sure to wear a helmet and stay alert.
Explore the Carmans River
Stand-up paddleboard, kayak, or canoe along the Carmans River. Start your trip where the river meets Montauk Highway, paddle down past Little Neck Run or Straddle Point for an epic out-and-back trip. While there’s 10 miles worth of river territory to explore, the best scenery can be seen from the tail-end just before the Bellport Bay. Pro tip: Be sure to bring bug spray and plenty of drinking water.
Wander Through the West Meadow Wetlands Reserve
From stunning shorelines to dirt trails and grazing deer, exploring West Meadow Wetlands Reserve is a must. Wear a pair of ankle-supporting boots and bring hiking poles for slippery, rocky areas.
Ride Along the Setauket-Port Jefferson Station Greenway
You’ll want to get back on your bike for this destination. On this 3.3-mile paved trail you’ll find a few dips and hills for added speed plus plenty of things to see along the way. Begin at the Setauket Greenway Trailhead where Hallock Avenue and Main Street/Patchogue Road intersect, end at Gnarled Hollow Road, and make your way back for a well-over 6-mile ride.
Sunrise Fishing Charters
Grab your fishing gear and head a few miles north to Smithtown Bay. You’ll board Sunrise Fishing Charters’ Grady White Seafarer for an awesome day on the water. Pick a Monday or Friday charter trip and reel in your best catch in the Long Island Sound.
