5 Free Family-Friendly Adventures Near Honolulu

|

We all know living on Oahu can be expensive. But, with so much to see and do on our amazing island, adventure doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are five free family-friendly adventures to try in and around Honolulu.

Hike the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail

This 2-mile trail serves up unreal views of the Pacific Ocean and the Oahu coastline. It’s a bit of a climb – about 500 feet in elevation gain – but the payoff is awesome. From the historic Makapu’u Lighthouse and endless blue sea to the rugged coastline and chance to spot a humpback whale, this trail offers sights that will leave the whole family smiling.

Stargaze From Mount Tantalus

Stargazing in Hawaii is hard to beat. You’ll have to travel outside the big city to distance yourself from all the artificial light. Mount Tantalus, a 2,000-foot-tall cinder cone just outside of town, gives you killer views of the night sky. For a different kind of beauty, you can also take in the city lights from afar. The best of all worlds!

Surf or Boogie Board Waikiki Beach

Even the tiniest adventure seekers will love Waikiki Beach. Its relatively mild, rolling waves are perfect for young surfers who are still finding their way on a board. Grab your surfboards or boogie boards from your StorQuest Self Storage unit and hit the waves at this epic spot on Oahu’s south shore! You can also stop by Waimanalo Bay Beach Park, another amazing spot for boogie boarding.

Snorkeling at Sans Souci Beach

Snorkeling is a must-try adventure for anyone who calls our awesome island home. Sans Souci Beach, also known as Kaimana Beach, makes a great spot for family-friendly, entry-level snorkeling. Here, you’ll find calm waters, colorful coral reefs, and fish and marine life of all types. If you want to break the rules and fork over a few dollars, take a trip to Hanauma Bay State Park. It’s a bit of a drive, and there’s a $12 entry fee for adults (kids 12 and under are free), but it’s worth it to explore the buzzing bay waters, where more than a hundred different species of fish roam.

Cliff Jumping at Waimea Bay

Head about an hour north to North Shore Oahu for an exhilarating cliff-jumping adventure at Waimea Bay. Taking the flying leap off the bay’s jagged cliffs takes a little courage, but it’s worth the amazing adrenaline rush. And if you’re not feeling it, you can simply kick back and take in the awesome coastal views.
