5 Epic Under-the-Radar Summer Vacation Spots

|

Looking for a sunny spot to enjoy big adventures without battling big crowds? StorQuest Self Storage has your back! Skip the overcrowded tourist spots and check out our list of five awesome under-the-radar summer vacations.

San Luis Obispo, California

While you won’t exactly have it all to yourself, San Luis Obispo on California’s Central Coast is definitely a quieter part of The Golden State, and it has a lot to offer if you love being outside. Head out for a jog along the vast sand beaches at Pismo Beach, and poke around epic rock formations at Dinosaur Caves Park. Bordered by the Pacific on the west and mountain ranges to the east, SLO offers some exceptional hiking, too. Climb up Ontario Ridge for stunning ocean views or bring your mountain bike for a scenic ride along West Cuesta Ridge.

Boise, Idaho

Somehow, Boise’s reputation across the country still hasn’t caught up to the reality that it’s one of the best hiking towns in the U.S. Take advantage and bring your trusty trail shoes for an active summer vacation in southern Idaho. Whether you stay in town and cruise the Boise River Greenbelt, escape to the remote reaches of Owyhee Canyon, or hit the beautiful Dry Creek Trail – you’ll have plenty to see and do. When you need to mix it up, take out a paddleboard on the Boise River or tackle some singletrack in the Boise National Forest and Sawtooth National Forest.

Asheville, North Carolina

Situated in the serene Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, Asheville will charm outdoor lovers with seemingly endless views of forested hills, and summer lets you see this beautiful region at its best. Hop on a SUP and ride the French Broad River through town, explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, or go big and summit Mount Mitchell – the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains. Southwest of Asheville, you’ll find some incredible mountain biking too. Diehards won’t want to miss bikepacking the Carolina Panther through Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest, and Panthertown Valley.

Brookings, Oregon

Just north of the California border in a quiet corner of southwest Oregon, Brookings serves up some of the country’s most incredible ocean views, boasting a rugged coastline of sea stacks and tide pools. Explore the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor along the 101 for a scenic joy ride and unique photo opps. When the Pacific Ocean calls, head out for some top-notch charter fishing and fight massive king salmon and halibut. To the east, the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest offers an amazing diversity of landscape. Traverse mountain peaks and forested trails to enjoy spectacular river, valley, and ocean views.

Telluride, Colorado

One of the country’s premier ski destinations, Telluride hardly flies under the radar during the cold weather months – but in the summer, you’ll find a completely different experience at this scenic town in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Stellar hiking for a range of ability levels awaits in the Uncompahgre National Forest, where you can discover the beauty of Bridal Veil Falls. If you’re a rock climber, you’ll find a wide range of rock types and climbing styles to keep you busy in the San Juans. Looking to summit a 14er? Climb to the 14,150-foot peak of Mount Sneffels for commanding views of southwestern Colorado.
