4 Epic Hikes Near Boulder: Fall Foliage Edition

|

The aspens are turning. The air has a bite to it. Warm hues are overtaking the mountainsides. It might not be time to start shredding the slopes quite yet, but autumn in Colorado is an epic time of year. Experience this colorful time to the fullest with these four hikes near Boulder.

Panorama Point

This 3-plus-mile loop trail lives up to its name, serving up awesome views of Boulder’s fiery fall foliage as you ascend toward the upper flanks of the almost 7,000-foot Flagstaff Mountain. You’ll reach Panorama Point and start heading back down toward town before the summit, but you can opt for a longer hike that takes you to the peak. Meadows, dense clusters of diverse trees, and maybe even wildlife greet you as you climb nearly 900 feet in elevation. The best part? The trailhead is just a few blocks from downtown Boulder. YourBoulder.com has the full scoop.

Big Bluestem Trail

A 4-mile hike that serves up fantastic views of Eldorado Canyon and the Flatiron Mountains, the Big Bluestern Trail is a fantastic fall route. Shimmering aspen groves, red-hued prairie grass, and towering green of pine trees join forces to provide some awesome views. Check out the details at Outbound.com.

Caribou Ranch

Looking to get your aspen fix? Head to Nederland for a colorful trek past golden grove after golden grove. It’s a relatively flat 4-mile hike at the edge of the Continental Divide. Bonus points if you pack your trail shoes and go for a run. Pick your time to visit wisely, as the trail can be rather busy. AllTrails.com has the details.

Lost Lake via Hessie Trail

Here’s another one near Nederland. This out-and-back trail in the Roosevelt National Forest is roughly 4.5 miles – and the shift to fall colors makes this already epic hike all the more spectacular. Your reward at the trail’s turning point is the chance to hang out at stunning Lost Lake. which this time of year is surrounded by a rainbow of warm fall colors. Visit AllTrails.com
