Epic Explorations to Discover in Ohio

|

Summertime weather is rolling in and sunny skies are on the horizon, which means you should be out there living it up in the beautiful Buckeye State. Ohio is jam-packed with plenty of epic outdoor destinations with anything and everything from lakes and rivers to national forests and endless hiking trails. There’s so much to see and do this time of year. So get out there on your next quest for adventure at one of these awesome spots in the state.

Hocking Hills State Park

30 miles of trails? Load up your backpack, lace up your boots, and grab your hiking poles. At Hocking Hills State Park in Logan, Ohio, you’ve got seven unique routes to choose from – or do all of them for an epic full day of trail-trekking in nature. These one-way looped trails bring you a heavy dose of local flora and fauna with plenty of truly awesome sights to see along the way. Think waterfalls, stone bridges, caves, cliffs, territory views, and rock tunnels. Need we say more?

Nickel Plate Beach

Warm days and plenty of sunshine invite you to break out your surfboard, paddleboard, or kayak from storage and head to the surf and sand action at Nickel Plate Beach in Huron, Ohio. And don’t forget to pack some grub for a lunch break in between paddling sessions – or better yet, head to the Sand Bar, a local watering hole, for beers and burgers.

Pro tip: The water on the south side of Lake Erie can be pretty brutal. This beach operates at a swim-at-your-own-risk site with no lifeguard on duty, so be sure to be mindful of strong currents when you’re out there treading water.

Ohio Caverns

While this must-see spot doesn’t get your body moving like some of the other destinations on our list, traversing into a cavern is about as thrilling and adventurous as it gets. Book your 50-minute guided tour online, bring your hiking boots, and charge up your headlamp – it’s about to get awesome. With over 2 miles of passageways ranging in depth from 30 feet to 103 feet, you won’t want to miss this incredible natural wonder. Plus, it’s a great way to beat the summer heat. Inside the caverns, it’s only 54 degrees.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Ready to take your next nature-infused adventure onto two wheels? Load up your bike and head to Cuyahoga Valley National Park for the 20-mile Towpath Trail, where you can bike along the Ohio and Erie Canal. Head one way in and take the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad back to your starting point for a killer ride.
