Unlock 10 Tips to Declutter Your Space

|

When gear is integral to your adventurous lifestyle, you need to find a way to make room for it all. If your home or storage unit is starting to feel cluttered, StorQuest Self Storage has your back. Use these 10 tips to help you maximize your space and save you time and energy down the road.

1. Set Goals

What do you want to accomplish? Be as specific and realistic as possible about what and how quickly you can achieve your goals. If you're an objective-oriented person, it helps to write everything down – including benchmarks to celebrate the small victories. It feels good just to cross things off a list. Setting reminders on your phone can also support you and push you to stay on task. Keep yourself motivated by reflecting on how awesome your space will be when it’s fully transformed.

2. Get Prepped

Before you get going, gather all the tools you’ll need to sort through all your belongings. Depending on what you’re working with, this could be a few trash bags, cleaning supplies, and a pair of rubber gloves or it might mean a trip to your local StorQuest storage facility to pick up high-quality boxes and packing materials.

3. Start Small

Easy does it. Decluttering can be a much bigger project than you might think, especially factoring everything else you have to do day-to-day. But a little bit goes a long way. Whether you have 15 minutes or two hours, pencil in some time each day to tidy up, and be sure to take breaks during longer sessions.

4. Check Your Gear

If it’s been a minute since you last looked over your stuff, take the time to sort through your belongings. If you love what you see, keep it. If not, consider repurposing, reselling, gifting, or donating quality items you don’t see yourself using anymore.

5. Embrace Labels

Everything has its place, and you want to remember where everything is. Labeling your stuff is simple but super important. You can go all out and get sets of stickers to color code everything, or stick to the tried and true permanent marker.

6. Stack Your Storage

To make the most of your space, invest in uniform high-quality plastic storage bins that you can easily stack. Why plastic? These will help protect your stuff from moisture-related damage, especially if you’re keeping your things in your shed or garage.

7. Install Wall Shelves

If your walls are empty, it’s time to get crafty. Installing wall shelves is generally pretty easy, and can be a convenient way to free up space on the floor and even add some character to your gear haven.

8. Utilize Ceiling Space

Lack of room got you down? Look up. Vertical space is prime real estate. Grab some ceiling mounts to store your mountain bikes. Install overhead loft storage and enjoy the added dimension for all your bulky items. Add a hoist system to your garage to keep your kayak or canoe out of the way but readily accessible for your future excursions.

9. Ask for Help

If you have a lot of items – or simply stuff that’s tough to carry and move around – don’t be afraid to ask friends and family for help! Pizza’s on you.

10. Get More Space

Don’t let a lack of space hold you back from your dreams. Sometimes you just need more room to explore the way you want, and self storage can help.
